A lot of people have been asking where I have been for the past 6 months and that’s a very good question. The truth is, I have just been going through a very busy time and something had to give!
My last post was in October, so what’s been going on since then? Well, first of all, I was studying for an exam in November which was pretty much all consuming as the big day approached (I am pleased to say that I passed!).
After that came Christmas, which for me is always a time to totally switch off. No e-mail, no websites, no business, just family, food and fun.
As 2020 started, I decided to dedicate myself to finishing the manuscript for my second book.
This is a project that I had been picking up and putting down for some time and the time was right to give this all of my attention and just get it finished.
That took a month or two of really focused work, using up almost all of my spare time until now, at the end of February. Add in a couple of family health issues and I had a recipe for feeling a little overstretched and over-committed.
This period has taught me a couple of really important lessons.
Nowadays we seem to have so many different projects and goals on the go, it can be tempting to try to tackle them all at once.
What I have discovered is that you don’t have to do everything, right now. That’s not to say you won’t do it some day, but does it have to be today?
Have a look at your current project list. Is there is anything on there that you are stressing over that could actually be done next week, next month or even next year. Heck, if you are really honest with yourself, perhaps there are things on there that don’t need to be done at all!
When I started this blog, I promised myself I would post every week, without fail!
I was mostly succeeding with this until around October as I mentioned above. When I decided to focus of a couple of other projects for a while, I thought people would be mad “you promised us you would post every week and now you have disappeared – what gives?”
What I discovered is that people are actually really understanding and in fact, the messages I received were more along the lines of “Hey Matt, we haven’t heard from you in a while – is everything ok?”
Don’t underestimate people’s power to understand – just tell them what’s going on!
As I reflect on the past few months, I am glad I made the decisions that I did. I passed my exam by focusing on it and giving it the time it deserved, earning me a new qualification and more authority within my profession.
This was hugely worthwhile and I would have been devastated to have failed and then I would have had to invest even more time in taking the exam again.
I am super happy with my book manuscript (although I’m sure my editor will still have a ton of things for me to change). Again, this project required some focus and time. I am glad that I set that time aside as I now have a finished book and not just another 80% finished project.
Finally, health and relationships have to come first. We have had a few health issues in the family over the past few months and this has highlighted the importance of self-care and taking some time out for yourself every once in a while.
During this whole time, I never forgot about Millennial Mutiny.
My passion for this project remained stronger than ever. It was simply that I made a conscious decision to focus on a couple of other ‘finite’ projects to get them finished and off of my plate.
Now that all of these other things are behind me, I am back and feeling better than ever about my mission to help more Millennials achieve True Financial Freedom.
